It has taken me quite some time to write this little Vendor Feature on Flora Corner Farm, and not because I couldn’t find anything to say, but quite opposite, there’s so much to say. From the minute I drove down the quiet little road in Southern Maryland, I fell in love with this wedding venue. No matter how many times I have photographed here for styled shoots or weddings, I am always in awe of its beauty and finding more reasons to love it and believe it’s a little gem in Mechanicsville, Maryland.
Like every great love story, Diane and Harold’s journey to open Flora Corner Farm, was one of fate. For them, their pale yellow barn was built for with the intention of using it for storage on the first level and an art studio for Diane on the second. The walls were unfinished and the original building was only the size of what is now the dance floor. In 2010, they found themselves looking at wedding venues in for their own daughter’s wedding when a friend suggested they use the barn. From there, they converted the unfinished space into something beautiful, even lining the walls with burlap that would later be the inspiration for the finished wall texture and the shabby chic space couples have come to know and love.
If you live in Maryland and plan on getting married in the next…EVER…Flora Corner Farm needs to be added to the top of your list of venues to visit. This venue is breathtaking. Yes, there are a lot of barn wedding venues in Southern Maryland, but there are so many details that make this location truly one of a kind. For starters, the property is stunning! The entire front lawn is a garden and the sides and back have rolling hills and fields, with a pond and an older rustic barn. There are beautiful flowers, mature trees providing the perfect amount of shade for an afternoon ceremony, a romantic tree swing, a patio perfect for cocktail hour, amazing sunsets and more quiet, little seating areas than I can count! Whether you are planning an elegant nighttime wedding or a Sunday brunch, the venue ambiance is warm and inviting, and welcoming like the comforts of home. Guests can even enjoy outdoor lawn games, a bonfire on the patio and s’mores under the stars. Rightfully so, Flora Corner Farm is #17 on The Venue Report for best Maryland wedding locations.
It’s not just a pretty farm venue though. The staff is exceptional and the client experience is their priority. They love what they do and dedicate the entire day to YOUR wedding! The owners, Diane and Harold, along with Wedding Coordinators, Heather and Amanda, do so much to make sure you have a flawless wedding day. From the start of planning, Heather, Amanda and Diane take time to meet with each perspective couple showing the property, answering any questions they have to even guiding them in the design process of the décor. As your wedding date nears, whichever coordinator has been assigned to you (Heather or Amanda), meets with you to discuss your décor and reception needs. Their décor inventory is available to use with certain packages with details including lanterns, candelabras, bird cages, wood slabs, vintage pieces and more. Channeling her artistic abilities, Diane even handwrites all of the calligraphy and signage for the couples from Welcome Signs, Seating Arrangements and more. As your wedding day approaches, these ladies help with creating a timeline for your day and reaching out to your vendors to coordinate any of their on-site needs. (Even the vendors are taken into consideration when planning!) On the wedding day, Harold can be found outside greeting guests and helping make sure their experience is exceptional even down to where they park.
Of course, I had a little fun with the staff during my visit behind the scenes and asked some seriously important, and maybe a little sappy, questions. (Full disclosure, all their answers are paraphrased by me. You didn’t think I would really record their “interview”, did you?) 😉
What are some of the important details, couples should know about booking Flora Corner Farm as it relates to amenities and pricing?
Each couple can select from one of the two collections or select from the A la Carte pricing. The Basic Reception Collection is far from “basic” as it includes the venue use for 5.5 hours, tables and chairs to accommodate 130 guests, white table linens, various vintage furniture pieces to use for your appetizers/buffet, dessert, gift table, welcome table, setup of the reception, bar, patio and pergola! Essentially all of the major rentals are taken care of for you and at only $5,500.
So, we already know how Diane and Harold came about opening Flora Corner Farm, but even Heather and Amanda started their career with some help from fate…
For Amanda, she actually came to a walk through with a friend and made a lasting impression on the owners. It wasn’t long after that, she joined Flora Corner as a Wedding Coordinator. Her sweet, adorable personality and attention to detail is an added bonus for any couples that have the opportunity to work with her.
For Heather, fate put her and Amanda in a class/workshop at the college together. Everyone went around the room sharing something that maybe others didn’t know about them. So, Amanda offered the detail that she also worked as a Wedding Coordinator. Heather confided in her that she really wanted to be a Wedding Coordinator one day and just as easy as saying hello, Amanda asked what was holding her back. Now, Heather is also a Wedding Coordinator and her personal experiences and memories of her own wedding, help her guide couples into planning a flawless wedding.
What are some of your favorite moments shared with your wedding couples or reasons you absolutely love Flora Corner Farm?
Like a couple that’s been happily married for a long, long time (27 years actually), Diane and Harold both agreed that they love the end of the night when they get to sit around the bonfire with guests and hear more endearing stories about the couple and see firsthand how much the guests have enjoyed their time at the farm.
For Amanda, her heart skips a beat during those last few minutes she is helping behind the scenes with the bride as she anxiously waits to walk down the aisle with her dad.
For the brides wanting first hand advice, Heather recalls the most romantic part of her own wedding day, being those quiet moments she had alone with her husband as they went for a walk. So, she’s a big advocate of the couples enjoying the sunset and sneaking away for portraits during this time.
Diane and Harold agree that these two ladies are intricate parts of the business and look forward to letting them manage the venue and events on their own in the next 5-6 years. Diane still plans on offering her calligraphy skills, but she’s looking forward to sneaking away for the weekends with Harold a little bit more.
More in love than ever, Diane and Harold, reminiscence that their favorite part of their own wedding, 27 years ago, was saying “I do”. I mean, how much better can you get? Their venue is spectacular, they love what they do, care about each of their couples and guests, and are a perfect example of true love.
As for vendor tips: If you have a wedding at Flora Corner Farm, the Wedding Coordinators will reach out to you a few weeks before the wedding with the couple’s timeline. This is the time to make any notes as to your arrival and any items you may need including a table, linens, extension cords, ladders, etc. They welcome vendors to arrive early to have setup complete before any of the guests have arrived. They absolutely love having all the behind the scenes work completed to add to the wow factor this venue has to offer!
